The Lost Dogs Line is a special service for owners that have lost their dog or cat, or have found a dog or cat, within the M25 area. The service is open seven days a week from 8am to 8pm.
Many people are not aware that Battersea Dogs Home has cats, but over 1000 stray cats are handed in to Battersea Dogs Home every year. To ensure these cats have a chance to go back to their rightful owners the Lost Dogs Line works for cats too.
Over 3,100 stray dogs and cats were reunited with their owners in 2001, thanks to the Lost Dogs Line. The service was launched in July 2000 in conjunction with the Metropolitan Police. It operates from 8am to 8pm, seven days a week, and is manned by a dedicated team of four staff. They use a special computer system to log reports of dogs lost within the M25, and try to match them to reports of dogs found in the same area. In fact, the Line received over 9,300 reports of lost dogs and cats during 2001.
Around 6,400 dogs and cats were brought into Battersea Dogs Home as strays during 2001, of which nearly 2,300 were reunited with their owners at the Home. A further 815 dogs were reunited with their owners without even having to come to the Home. Being able to reunite a lost dog with his owner before he reaches Battersea Dogs Home has many benefits, such as reducing stress for both the dog and the owner, and relieving the impact on the already over-stretched facilities of police stations and Battersea.
