Ruby is an 18 month old Boxer cross, she has lived a fairly sheltered life so far and is nervous of new people and environments. It has taken over four weeks for Ruby to build a bond and trust a select few members of staff at Battersea, so her new owners will need to be very patient as she may take time to settle in a new home and feel comfortable around her new owners. Ruby was brought in to Battersea by her previous owners with her sister as they were working long hours and it was not fair on the dogs as they were not receiving the attention they needed. Due to the amount of time Ruby was left on her own she is under socialised and will need dedicated owners prepared to put the work in required, Ruby will always be a wary or a nervous dog but should improve with the right handling. Once she knows you Ruby is very affectionate and loving, she will make a loyal addition and like most Bull breeds she will make you laugh everyday with her comical expressions and clown like character. Ruby is currently unfit and due to her breed type struggles walking long distances, especially in the hot weather so if you are looking for a jogging companion then Ruby is not for you. Ruby will need small and regular daily walks to start building up her fitness levels, she is normally well behaved on and off the lead but she will need active and strong owners as she is a large girl. Ruby knows a few basic commands and is trainable but owners will need to have built a good relationship before they continue with her training. Ruby may need housetraining and she previously travelled well in a car. Ruby was also previously crate trained and it would be advisable to continue using a cage so she has somewhere where she can hide and will feel safe and secure. Ruby will need experienced rescue or large dog owners, due to her nervous nature she would not be suitable as a first time dog. Ideally her new owners should have dealt with nervous dogs before so they know what to expect and what work is required, these types of dogs are so rewarding but do need the right handling. Unfortunately Ruby cannot live with children, she has not been around children in the past and would not cope in a busy household, ideally needs an all adult home. Due to her size she will need to live in a large house or flat with a secure garden in a semi-rural or rural environment, she cannot live in a flat above ground floor as most larger breeds do tend to struggle with large amounts of stairs etc. Ruby is fine around other dogs but is undersocialised so her new owners will need to continue the social work needed. She would prefer a home on her own without other pets but could possibly live with a male dog, it would need to be an older adult that could be a good role model for her. Ruby is a fantastic dog once you have built a bond and she trusts you, she will be a fun dog to have around. Any new owners will need to visit Ruby a few times before she can go home as she will take time to trust new people. If you think you can offer this special dog the home she deserves then please contact the rehoming team at Old Windsor on 01784 494443.
