                                                          Who is Cheech?

Cheech is a 1 to 2 year old female Jack Russell Terrier that came into the Home in November 2007. She is white with large tan spots. She will be micro chipped before leaving the Home.

Why did Cheech come into the home?

Cheech arrived at Battersea Dogs and Cats Home as a stray in November 2007.  She has had a wee while with us which is down to her need for a very specific home.

                                                  What is Cheech like?

Cheech is a sociable and energetic lady who is a true terrier at heart. She can, at times, be a feisty little madam but is generally well mannered with her human companions. She is a smart and inquisitive girl but can be, on occasions, a real hand bag swinger around other dogs

Why has Cheech been seen by the Behaviour Unit?

Cheech has been seen by the Behaviour Unit in the Home due to her interactions with other dogs, especially females and generally pushy mannerless dogs; her lead frustration whilst around other dogs and her intolerance of rough play and games.
While she has the ability to offer good social behaviours with some dogs, she has shown herself to having a distinct intolerance of over-the-top, bolshy dogs and will have no problems telling them off. If you are looking for a giggly dog to take down to the park for walks with all the other dogs then you may want to look elsewhere, as Cheech will need careful socializing in quiet parks with specific dogs.
Cheech can become vocal on lead around other dogs but this tends to be when she is around a dog on close quarters. New owners will need to do a fair amount of training in this area in order to alleviate the problem.
Cheech does not like rough games so owners will need to be realistic as to their expectations here. If you are looking for a robust dog to wrestle with then she is not the one for you!

What kind of home is Cheech looking for?

Cheech will need to be rehomed into a quiet semi to rural environment that has several suitable parks and exercise areas that are low dog populated. Ideally new owners will have the facilities available to provide a "Cheech area" where she can chill out.
A house or a flat will be considered, as long as there is a private, securely enclosed garden.

What kind of owners is Cheech looking for?

Cheech's new owners will ideally have had terriers before as she is one for the true terrier enthusiast, but owners who have had experience of similar character (regardless of breed) will also be considered .Owners must have had strong willed female dogs before and have a sound knowledge of how to maintain them within a household.
It is essential that any new owners will need to have a confidence in dealing with her dog-to-dog issues. The ability to read dog body language is essential with new owners ideally having had a dog with similar issues previous.
The Behaviour Unit would potentially consider owners without the above experience if they are willing to take on all advice; this is dependent of facilities and attitude (at discretion of BU)
Unfortunately Cheech is not suited to living with young children as she will not tolerate being pestered, however older teens 14yrs+ may be considered dependent upon experience, (must have been  around dogs with a similar character) expectations and level of involvement.
Occasional visiting children 10 years plus could potentially be considered at discretion of BU

I Think I fit that criteria.  What should I do next?

Contact a member of the Behaviour team on 02076277884, or email [email protected] and quote the reference 2007/05807.  Cheech will need some further training in her new home. To receive advice and guidance regarding this training from the Behaviour Unit staff that have worked with her, potential owners should be prepared to come into the Dogs Home for a minimum of two visits.
