If you like energetic and affectionate Springer Spaniel types, Callie could be the one for you! As a result of some previous bad experiences, when Callie first arrived at Battersea Dogs and Cats Home in May 2007, she was very nervous about being handled. She came under the care of our Behaviour Unit to start with, and has subsequently spent her days assisting Jan, our Chief Executive, in her office, where lots of love and consistent training has helped her start feeling more comfortable when being handled. So much so that she even enjoys a cuddle on Jan's lap now and again when no one is looking!
The home we are ideally looking for Callie would match the following:
- Callie is a very energetic dog, whowill find ways of amusing herself without gentle guidance. She will therefore need calm and patient owners who have experience of spaniels or similar high energy working breeds
- Owners prepared to continue her training to ensure that she continues to build up her confidence about being handled, and also to ensure that some early signs of food and toy possession, which we don't tend to see anymore, due to constant training, aren't able to resurface
- Older and mature household is prefered who can provide her with plenty of activity but also a stable routine
- Because of her history of handling problems, Callie is not suitable to live with young children but teenagers 14 years plus will be considered if they play a role in her training
- Callie will be more relaxed in areas that are not too heavy populated, so a quiet suburban or semirural / rural environment would be needed
- Callie would probably be best as an only dog; however, she might be able to live with an older, calm and sociable male dog who would be relaxed around Callie's high energy levels
- Unfortunately, Callie is not suitable to live with cats
Callie is a delightful girl, who will be a loving and fun companion to owners able to give her the right balance of activity and calm interaction she requires. The owners who can provide her with the home that she needs will never look back.
Callie is at Battersea Dogs & Cats Home, London. Please call 020 7627 7884 if you are interested in Callie or email us on [email protected] and quote ref 2007/02379. Callie will need some further training in her new home. To receive advice and guidance regarding this training from the Unit staff that have worked with her, potential owners should be prepared to come into the Dogs Home for a minimum of two visits.
