Wow! Rusty is a very clever young man. He needs new owners who are as clever and quick as he is. This 1-year-old tan and white collie X came into Battersea in November 2002 as a gift.

Rusty has a great personality but a few behavioural problems that our rehabilitation team have looked at. These include:

Jealousy issues over attention - Rusty had problems in his last home with sharing his owners and resources with the other dog in the household. While this problem is redeemable, Rusty's new owners must invest a lot of time and training to gain control and influence his behaviour. He therefore cannot live with another dog.

Attention seeking - This is essentially aggression directed towards other dogs. New owners will need to be confident with this dog-to-dog problem and if they follow his training programme, he will be able to socialise with other dogs. It will take time and patience, but you will be rewarded.

Stimulation - Rusty will need a lot of mental and physical stimulation, he's very sharp and quick so will need lots of different things to keep him entertained and also to burn off some of his energy.

We are looking for a Semi-rural to rural home for Rusty. A garden will be important, as he will need plenty of training and release of energy in a secure environment. It will need to be an area with low dog population.

New owners should have "hands on" experience of collie types as they need to be prepared for the time and energy that Rusty will take up and be enthusiastic as well as active but composed. New owners must be prepared to control his behaviours while changing them. No children, adults only as he could transfer the jealousy issue. Rusty might be able to live with cats, he will need testing.

Rusty has a lot of good points. He is a quick learner. He is young and very motivated by toys and food and he enjoys being around people. He is an endearing dog and owners will have a lot of fun with him but first the right relationship needs to be established
and a lot of guidance will be essential. Potential owners will need a structured eagerness and intelligence to really appreciate and enjoy Rusty's character.
