Who is Pepper?
Pepper is a black, 18month old, neutered male Labrador cross.
He came in to Battersea in November 2002 as a stray.
When he came to us he was about half his normal body weight and struggled to cope with such a busy environment Pepper has an unusual problem: he gets very, very anxious if restrained or put in a small area but give him space and he can settle down.
He has toy and food motivations but gets worried if a lot is asked from him.
He has a loving and sweet nature and will need to go to owners who can appreciate him with the problems he has got.
What does Pepper need?
Pepper needs a rural environment with direct access to fenced space. Ideally a farm or stable set-up might suit (the option to go outside will be necessary for the first few months but spending time inside and sleeping indoors etc needs to be built-up, but can be done).
His new owners should have some experience of Labradors or Labrador types but preferably of the working companion type rather than a family pet. (However Pepper will not be suitable to be a working dog as he gets too stressed).
They should have a calm and mature attitude and have relaxed expectations from him.
He is great with other dogs (ideally suited to live with another dog or to be run in a pack)
In fact Pepper has been a great stooge dog while he has been here and has helped quite a few under-socialised dogs to relax and read body language.
Not so good with cats.
Pepper won't cope living with children but older teens may be considered depending on their experience
Pepper is not good to lead walk. This will need to be worked on by the new owners if needed.
Where is Pepper?
Pepper can't cope with our conventional kennels, so he lives in an area at the back of our Battersea site in his own little portacabin and run, looked after by the rehab staff.
Why Pepper?
Pepper has a heart of gold. He isn't the brightest star in the sky but is definitely a dog that will bring a smile to your face
